ETNOBOTANY LORE AND ANCIENT PARTICLES

There are several culivars within the species Citrus sinensis - the three most common are navel, Jaffa, and Valencia. The tree (and its fruit) is much smaller than the bitter orange one and less hardy. The orange tree is believed to be native to the Himalayas and southern China. In the sixteenth century, Protuguese explorers introduced the fruit to Europe and Columbus brought the tree to the Americas; it was primarily grown in Florida and West Indies. In ancient China orange dried peels were used to treat coughs, colds, and anorexia. Today the oil is used extensively in food flavouring and coloring; orange wax - a by-product of orange oil processing - is used in perfumery. d-limonene redistilled from the oil is used in the plastics industry and quick drying inks.
